My 16 year old daughter, a live streamer on Twitch, is now back in the kitchen filming herself cooking to post on TikTok, whilst my eldest, a speech therapist living and working in London is collaborating with a friend to promote her work through Instagram and Teachers Pay Teachers. Meanwhile, my dad, who is 82 has tuned into the professional social platform to publicise his book on LinkedIn. He currently collects followers with a gym junkie-like discipline. And at work, in line with chatter over the idea of ‘the great resign’, a colleague has just left his job as an academic to begin his start up - turning his hobby in discussing military history to a successful online shop.
Is there no end to the stories we have of relatives and friends who are creatively connecting with technology to further their passions, dig deep into their imaginations and embrace their community online? The tech developments of the 21st century have opened up so many new opportunities for us as individuals. And at the same time, they have also complicated our lives with new ways of thinking about, implementing and marketing our ideas.
Yesterday, I watched Jack Conte (creator of Patreon) talking on YouTube. He calls the talk Nothing Works and it is about growth, learning and faceplanting! It is worth it if you are like me - looking for a spark of success as I begin to document my creative journey.
What I like, is that Conte says that the norm is that we have lots of what he calls misses in our lives. And that is okay. This is the human experience. When I finished watching, I tweeted about it and gave it an emoticon thumbs up.
When we look up from our daily grind, we often realise that time has moved along and a decade or so has gone by. And
Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans – John Lennon.
This year I am going to work on an experiment. I am going to do two things:
Write about how and why we are growing a personal brand using the creator economy.
Evaluate and discuss the implications of decentralisation across industries.
Banks, Schools, Finance, Journalism - structures are changing due to the opportunities afforded to us by tech. But are we aware of what is happening?
Growth, learning and some face planting - 2022 is the year of writing about a Creator Economy and how it impacts our society - local and global. As well as how the Creator Economy effects you, me and the the next generation to come.
Follow me on the journey to see how the Creator Economy works for you.
